INTERFACE Bulli, is a project that began in 2008 between the collaboration of Ikonic (Pere Gifre and Daniel Molina) with Ferran Adria and his restaurant elBulli. Initially the project was based on a charge of Ferran Adrià to design its new dishes, but then we realize that we can go further and the goal becomes to design new ways to serve food.

This new approach gives rise to a research and pioneering development in the area of industrial design and cuisine. Ferran Adrià in 2010 heralds the end of the world’s best restaurant El Bulli to make creative foundation of elBulli cuisine, INTERFACEBULLI becomes one of the R & D department that will support this new foundation.

elBulli as a restaurant will close this season to become a foundation in two years, elBULLI FOUNDATION. However the projects don´t stop and Ferran Adrià is thinking constantly. Together we are developing an ambitious idea for a tableware research and development center.

We are currently working on the idea and looking for the best sponsor. The final idea will be announced next year.

On the other hand we are designing for him new tableware proposals. Nowadays we are adapting the designs that we have designed during this year for their final use, adapting them to manufacturing processes that you can see below.

MAY 2008. Dinner at elBulli. First contact.

DEC 2008. Meeting at elBulli. Ferran Adrià proposes that we design their new chocolate box. At the end of the meeting we had a big proposal: to design their new tableware for the snacks.

JAN 2009. We started to analyze the elBulli elaborations, their techniques and philosophies to understand their needs and make a project brief. All of this was done in collaboration with elBulli and also with elBulli Taller team.

FEB 2009. We present a concept proposal for development.

TOKYO TASTE – Ferran Adrià presents the concepts on which we are working.

FORUM GASTRONOMIC DE GIRONA – Ferran Adrià presents the new tableware project.

MAR 2009. We manufacture some prototypes to evaluate their use.

MAY 2009. INDABA 2009. Ferran Adrià presents the tableware concept design animations at the festival celebrated in South Africa.

LA SEXTA NEWS. La sexta TV channel broadcast a special program about the cuisine of elBulli and Ferran Adrià showing the first prototypes.

JUN 2009. elBulli begins its season until December.

JUL-DIC 2009. We evaluate the designs in the elBulli kitchen itself, studying in detail their internal work processes and elaborations preparation.

SEPT 2009. DOCUMENTARY RTVE. The National Spanish television broadcast an advance of “The history of elBulli”, which contains some fragments of the designs video presentation.

OCT 2009. MIPCOM – “The history of elBulli” documentary is presented. It consists of a collection of 8 DVDs, which will be broadcast in RTVE in 2010, including a summary with the new tableware concept. The images are also used for the credits and for the promotional documentary spot.

DEC 2009. EelBulli closes its doors until next season. The DVD collection “The history of elBulli” goes on sale internationally.

JAN 2010. We are currently working on the adaptation of the designs for their final use, adapting them to manufacturing processes.

The beginning…Getting to know elBulli

During the design process the participation of Ferran Adrià, Marc Cuspinera, Mateu Casañas, Eduard Xatruch and Oriol Castro, as well as all the staff of elBulli, has been fundamental to us.

New tableware collection based on biomimesis and vfx engineering for elbulli restaurant. Designed by Pere Gifre in collaboration with Ferran Adria and elBulli team.

Ferran Adrià he managed to create his own language, something that has turned into a very influential issue on the international scene. This is what I am interested in, I dont care if people consider it as an art or not. It is very important to mention that the artistic intelligence does not depend on the format; we should not relate art only with photography, sculpture, painting, neither with cooking in its most strict sense. But under certain circumstances, cooking can also be considered as an art.
